Trying to your page content optimized for the web is difficult at the best of times, especially if you are dealing with a Content Management System ‘CMS’ which is not particularly user friendly.

There are so many options and resources of advice at our finger tips, with different professionals and companies telling us what we should and should not be doing, and what is best for us without evening really getting to know us, our business or the systems we are using.

Well in this article we are going to discuss SEO, but not the best practices of how you should write your keywords, nor are we going to cover what the best way is to write your content in to be most effective with your description, as all that information would be purely speculative, impossible to tell without knowing your business, and also highly down to personal preference. Yes there are best practices but they to are only effective from personal experience, who is to say they work for everyone?

No, this article is going to cover a few simple stages in getting page content that you have already written ‘ready’ to be added into a content management system and to try to make optimizing it a much easier and hassle free process.

Step 1 – Prep Prep Prep.

So to start with, we need to prepare our content. By this I mean the content needs to be fully written and in a state that you are happy with it and are not going to be changing or editing anything at this stage at least.

This should be done outside of your CMS, especially if you are struggling to use your CMS. There is nothing worse than writing straight into a CMS WYSIWYG editor, to then have to strip everything back, mess around with content and start creating keywords, descriptions and clever titles. Do this before hand in an environment you are comfortable in.

Now, we have our content and we assume we have optimized it the way we want to. Bear in mind that you optimize content as you write, I already know what I want this article to be optimized for, and therefore as I type I am sub consciously gearing my copy towards my chosen direction of SEO.

Step 2 – The Description.

So what we do next is we take our copy and create a description from it. This is a block of keyword rich copy that best describes your whole article in one paragraph (maximum of 160 characters)

This needs to make sense also, as it is used by search engines, but it also needs to be very keyword heavy. This is the time to create this content before it is added into the CMS.

Step 3 – Keywords.

So, as mentioned above, we are not going to go into what are the best practices for keyword creation, but what I would say is you keywords need to relate to your page copy, throwing a load of generic site wide keywords on a page will not do it any good. That is why this three step process is quite good as it windles down your main article to your description to your keywords, keeping everything linked in one document so you have a full overview of all your copy.

So all I would say here is your keyword list needs to be generated from your copy and description so it remains related.

Step 4 – Images and supporting media.

Once we have our copy, description and keywords, we need to gather up any other media we intend to use on the page, whether it be images or links to videos. This is important as if you are mid adding copy to your page and realize you want to add an image, you have to save your copy (If the CMS your using allows you to save as drafts) then go and find an image, upload, go back to your previously half crated content, find your image…etc etc you can see where I am going with this.

So basically in a nut shell, you need to gather all elements of a page or article together before hand as it allows you to keep in a flow while writing, it saves time in the long run and it stops you having to dart all over gathering content once your are in your CMS.
The final step now becomes the fun part.

All you do is get into your CMS environment, and start copying your content in. Be careful copying from Microsoft Word or certain text editors as they can bring in nasty code, use the safe copy tool in the WYSIWYG, or paste from a plain text editor.

And that is it, simply preparing all your content and media before hand can make for creating optimized content through your CMS a much quicker, more effective and simpler experience.

One of my friends emailed me to say they were pitching for a piece of consulting work. They were tendering social media while the competing agency was offering an SEO solution.

Consider this for a moment. The question for the potential client has come down to two opposing offers. Social or SEO.What sequence of events caused the client to be in a situation of choosing between tactics. Why one or the other? How do you even decide that choice?

Really the answer should be “all of the above”, but in truth it should be about the real goals and challenges of the organisation rather than like choosing between takeout menus!

What is the overall strategy?
Which problem are we solving?
What do we need to achieve?
Are there tactics that are already in place or need integrating with?

When I hear SEO versus social media it always seems to be a “we need more traffic/visibility”. And when I hear that it is usually a deeper issue rather than just visitor count.

If you are ever confronted with a “we need some of that social, or maybe SEO” type question then you need to drill down why. Then keep asking why until you get to the real core issue.

Want more customers? Build a real lead generation engine, don’t start picking tactics from a menu.

Whenever you start an online business, a killer website is one of the must-have things on the cards. Driving a lot of traffic to your website is definitely pretty difficult, but that’s not the only consideration that should be kept in mind.

The most important aspect of a website is its visual appeal and user-friendliness. Remember, getting repeat-visitors is all about providing seamless website user experience. Folks prefer to browse website that have unique looks, and present the needful data in a convenient manner, rather than browsing through one of the countless websites that appear to be a replica of the existing big names over the internet.

Designing user-friendly websites is all about understanding what keeps a visitor glued on to the website, and what really makes him/her leave it. It is a bitter truth that plenty of websites have tons of useful information to entice the visitors, but these websites dont present the same in the desired manner. As a result, the only thing that the visitors do, after going through the topsy-turvy non-sense presented on these websites is a tap on the back button of their browser.

One of the crucial things that should be on top of your list while designing a website and running a PPC campaign is the first time user-experience. As the good old saying goes first impression is indeed the last impression and this holds true literally in case of those visitors who arrive at a website after performing a search on a particular keyword in the search engine.

For instance, a user searches the keywords book hotels in Miami, and visits a Florida hotel booking website. Having searched for a hotels in Miami on the search engine already, if the visitor is again presented with area-wise listing in Florida and made to select Miami in the category option one more time; there are good chances that he/she may not want to go through the hassle of doing the same thing over and again.

More so, your website homepage isnt really the best landing page for a visitor who arrives through a search engine. Therefore, it is imperative that you create sufficient web pages on your website targeting different products/services that you wish to offer to your visitors and potential customers.

Furthermore, using too much of JavaScript codes on your website may again not be a wise decision, as it hurts the loading time of the website significantly. Hence, if you wish to incorporate any contextual advertisements, banners or product promotion services on your website, you should prefer usage of HTML codes, so long as you can help the cause.

It is a well known fact that visitors hate to wait for more than few seconds (max 3-5seconds on an average) for a website to load. And, if your website takes over 10seconds to load, then you are most likely to loose 50-60% of your targeted traffic right away!

Keeping these aspects of web design in mind can help you improve your online business manifolds.
